STATE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Producer Licensing (Individuals):
-
Individual applicants must be 18 years
old or older as determined from the applicant’s Date of Birth.
- Non-Citizens of U.S. Must hold U.S.
resident license in a reciprocal state.
- RI
will allow reinstatements of a license if
- Status is not active
- and the Expiration date is >30 days and less than 365 days.
- Applicants that are applying for Variable
Life/Variable Annuities (VL/VA) must provide the NASD CRD No. on the Uniform
Application, Series 63, 6,or 7 exam; register with the RI Securities Division
and must hold the line of authority of Life.
The Insurance Division is required to verify the CRD information on the
NASD website. Registration
documents should be mailed to the above-mentioned address and should include a
copy of the eNRL transaction page/number.

copies may be faxed to: (401)-222-5475 (ATTN: Licensing).
- Designated Responsible Licensed Producers
(DRLP) are required to hold an active RI license (resident or nonresident). The
DRLP must hold the same line(s) of authority that are being requested by the
Business Entity.
- The DRLP is required to apply and the
application must be approved by Rhode Island Insurance Division; prior to the
submission of the business entity application.
To verify that the individual has been approved with the RI
Insurance Division and holds an active license, you may visit the Department
website at https://sbs-ri-public.naic.org/Lion-Web/jsp/sbsreports/AgentLookup.jsp.
- Applicants for Surplus
Line Broker License type should first hold a Property and Casualty Producer
license in RI.
- Electronic applicants
will not receive a refund for state fees if the application is declined.
- Electronic applications
will only be issued for a biennial license.
- Please provide the
transaction page/number along with any supporting documentation to the
state.
Producer Licensing (business entities):
- Business entities must provide NASD
Registration Number (CRD) on the application. Business Entities must register
with NASD as a Broker Dealer or an affiliation of a Broker Dealer and must be
noted on the NASD website.
- Business entity applicants are required
to have at least one (1) Designated
Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP) and must hold an active Resident or Non
Resident license in RI.
- The DRLP is required to apply and the
application must be approved by Rhode Island Insurance Division; prior to the
submission of the business entity application. To verify that the individual has been approved with the RI
Insurance Division and holds an active license, you may visit the Department
website at https://sbs-ri-public.naic.org/Lion-Web/jsp/sbsreports/AgentLookup.jsp.
- Applicants for Surplus Line Broker
License type should first hold an active Property and Casualty Producer license
in RI.
Surplus Line Broker Licensing:
- Applicants that are applying for a
Surplus Line Broker License must have an active RI Property & Casualty
Insurance Producer License. If not,
the online Surplus Line Broker application will be rejected.
- Rhode Island
is reciprocal with those states that do not require a bond. For a list of those states that require a bond, applicants should visit
the Department website at http://www.dbr.state.ri.us/pdf_forms/insur/SLB%20Bond%20Information.pdf.
If the home state is not listed, a bond is NOT required and is
not needed as part of the RI Surplus Line Broker nonresident license application
process.

All RI licensed Business Entities are required to have at one (1)

Claims Adjuster Licensing:
- Applicants that do not reside in
a reciprocal state are required to take and pass the state licensing examination
with Promissor. For a list of the
states that are reciprocal with Rhode Island, applicants should visit the
Department website at
http://www.dbr.state.ri.us/pdf_forms/insur/Rhode%20Island%20reciprocal%20states.pdf.
- To schedule an examination,
applicants should call Promissor (test administrator) at 1-888-204-6246 or you
may visit their website at www.promissor.com.
- If you successfully passed the RI state
licensing exam and the application is submitted electronically, the exam results
are automatically submitted to the online licensing system.
- Individuals that do not reside in
a reciprocal state are required to complete the Criminal Background Report
requirement. For more information
relating to this requirement, individual applicants should review the

- All RI licensed business entities are

Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser Licensing:
- RI
is not reciprocal with any state for this license type and all individual
Motor Vehicle Damage Appraiser applicants are required to take and pass the
RI state licensing examination with Promissor (test administrator).
To schedule an examination, applicants should call Promissor at
1-888-204-6246 or you may visit their website at www.promissor.com.
- The
passed exam results are valid for one-year from the date completed.
- If
you successfully passed the RI state licensing exam and the application is
submitted electronically, the exam results are automatically submitted to
the online licensing system.
- All
individual applicants are required to comply with a Criminal Background
Report requirement. For more
information, applicants should review the instructions that are on the
Department website at http://www.dbr.state.ri.us/pdf_forms/insur/Instructions%20and%20Application%20for%20Individual%20Motor%20Vehicle%20Damage%20Appraiser.pdf.
- All

State fees will not be collected by NIPR (on behalf of RI) when a transaction is
declined according to RI business rules. Transaction fees and processing fees
will still apply. Violation of the following rules will result in a decline
response.
- Individual applicants - Applicant must be 18
years old or older as determined from the applicant’s Date of Birth.

application when applying for Variable.

hold an active Resident or Non Resident license in RI.
- Business
Entity applicants - The sum of all the LOAs applied for in RI by the
Business Applicant must be covered by the sum of the DRLP active licensed
LOAs in RI.
- Applicant for Surplus Line Broker License type
must hold or apply for Property and Casualty in RI.
Rhode Island will allow reinstatements of a license if Status is not active
and the Expiration date is >30 days and less than 365 days. Late fees will be
assessed.
